Local agents representing AARP-selected insurers, including the Genworth Financial companies, who meet certain qualifications can now offer AARP endorsed products in person as "Authorized to Offer" agents. AARP has selected companies to provide increased flexibility and expanded options to help meet members' complex insurance needs. Speaking to an authorized agent is important because:

1. Member surveys have indicated this personalized service is important.
2. Agents can address the complexity of many of the insurance and financial products AARP members may need in order to provide protection and a sense of security.
3. An in person meeting can address your specific questions and concerns, and lead to a more thorough understanding of how the solution addresses your unique need.

What can you expect from an "Authorized to Offer" Agent?
You can expect a trusted professional... each agent is required to practice four core principles:

1. Approach every interaction with integrity.
2. Put your needs first. Even if it means recommending a product not endorsed by AARP.
3. Be an expert and stay informed.
4. Display commitment to the community.

How are AARP members assured that only knowledgeable, trustworthy, and professional agents speak to them?
Every authorized agent is required to meet rigorous criteria to become "Authorized to Offer."

"Authorized to Offer" criteria includes:

Selection and Training
  • Required agent training on product, ethics and needs analysis, in addition to regulatory training requirements
  • State licensure
  • Annual disciplinary history and background check review, including third party credit and criminal checks
  • Commitment to community service
  • Demonstrated competency and experience requirements
  • Refresher training every year
Sales Policies and Consumer Protection
  • Agent must requalify annually
  • Prohibiting "door-to-door" marketing
  • Prohibiting "cold calling"
  • "Neutral" compensation policies that don't incentivize and agent to recommend one product over another
  • Will meet with you in the setting of your choice
  • Signed Code of Ethics
  • Consumer protection through required Errors and Omission insurance
Fair Selling and Consumer Clarity
  •  Prohibiting inducements to purchase
  • Clear explanation of who you're doing business with
  • Required consumer disclosures to verify understanding of the policy
  • Mystery Shopping Program to monitor agent sales practices
