ARE YOU TOO ANGRY?

Text Size:
You scream at the guy who cuts you off in traffic. You slam the phone down on the telemarketers who call during dinner. You curse out the umpires at your grandkids’ Little League games. So what? They deserve it, you think. Maybe they do. But what is all that anger doing to you and your loved ones?

Yes, getting angry is normal. But overwhelming anger isn’t. It scares your family and friends. It takes a toll on your physical health. It may even be a sign of deeper emotional or mental health issues.

Most of us don’t think much about our outbursts, say experts at the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research. We just erupt. It’s only later, when things calm down, that we can take stock of our anger.

How do you react in situations that raise your hackles?

  • Do you express anger in a way that overwhelms you and others?
  • Do you get angry more often than most people you know?
  • Do you get angrier than is necessary?
  • Do you use threatening language or gestures?
  • Do you get angry enough to hit, throw, or kick things?
  • Do you stay angry for hours?
  • Do you hide angry feelings from others or try to suppress your feelings?
  • Do you use alcohol or drugs to calm your rage?
  • Do you experience physical reactions such as muscle tension or a racing heart when you get angry?
  • Does expressing your anger usually leave you feeling better about yourself and the person who angered you?

If any of these sound like you, you may need help. First, ask your doctor to assess your overall mental health. If a medical condition such as depression or bipolar disorder is ruled out, discuss your anger issues. Anger management can be learned and there are resources available to help.
