SOLVE YOUR STRESS, SAVE YOUR SKIN

Text Size:

Winter’s cold, dry weather isn’t the only thing that can take a toll on skin and hair. Stress also can lead to dermatologic problems such as acne, eczema, brittle nails or even hair loss. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) has some tips to help soothe stress-related symptoms.

How does stress cause dermatological damage? It raises levels of the body’s stress hormone cortisol. This in turn causes an increase in oil production, which can lead to oily skin, acne and other skin problems. Stress also impedes the skin’s ability to repair itself and heal.

The AAD says stressful, life-changing events such as surgery can cause hair loss. The body sends its energy to recovery and healing and not to growing new hair.

And many people take their stress out on their fingernails. They develop nervous habits such as biting, picking or rubbing their fingers over their thumbnail, which can distort the nail.

To save your skin, hair and nails, the AAD recommends the following:

  • Learn to recognize the underlying stress that may be triggering your symptoms. Then try to minimize the stress.
  • Exercise. Regular physical activity helps release endorphins that can reduce stress.
  • Avoid very hot showers or baths and use detergent-free soaps. Moisturize as soon as possible after bathing.
  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher daily to protect your skin from sun exposure, even in winter.
