Nutritionally speaking, the holidays can be a tough time, especially for families dealing with diabetes. Food is a huge part of the season, and we’re not talking broccoli here. But with a little preparation and some careful planning, anyone—even those with diabetes—can enjoy the holidays and eat healthfully. You can even indulge in some of those not-so-healthy treats. The American Diabetes Association shows you how.
1. Plan ahead. The more you know about what's going to happen, the better you can plan your eating habits. What does your schedule look like for the holidays? Are you traveling? Are visitors staying with you? Do you attend a lot of parties and food-oriented events? Do you include physical activity—a New Year’s Day touch football game, perhaps? Knowing what your schedule will look like ahead of time will help out a great deal as you prepare your eating routine each day.
2. Consider your menus. Do you typically have traditional dishes that you make every year? You may want to fine-tune them a bit. For example, prepare your favorite casserole with fat-free or light sour cream, or steam the green beans instead of sautéing them in butter.
3. Make trade-offs. If you really look forward to a favorite family cheesecake, have a piece. Just make it a smaller piece, and pass on the rest of the dessert tray. Or exercise more the day after you indulge.
