ANOTHER CALL FOR CALCIUM

Text Size:

If you’re not taking a calcium supplement, you may be missing out on a critical tool in the fight against osteoporosis. An analysis of 17 research studies involving more than 52,000 people proves it. For those over 50, calcium supplementation may cut the overall risk of bone fractures by as much as 24 percent and slow bone loss by 54 percent.

“Evidence supports the use of calcium, or calcium in combination with vitamin D supplementation, in the preventive treatment of osteoporosis in people aged 50 years or older,” the researchers write in the Aug. 25 issue of The Lancet. “For best therapeutic effect, we recommend minimum doses of 1200 mg of calcium, and 800 IU of vitamin D (for combined calcium plus vitamin D supplementation).”

The results were best for those who adhered to the correct dosage. But even subjects who took less saw improvement.

Food sources such as green leafy vegetables and fortified orange juice provide calcium. Sunshine helps your body create vitamin D. But winter isn’t a great time to be outdoors, and fresh veggies may be in short supply. That’s why supplements may be a good idea.

Just be sure to discuss any supplements with your doctor first.
