ATTENTION, WOMEN (AND THOSE WHO LOVE THEM)

Text Size:

Are you aware of the damage heart disease can do to you?

Ask most women what their biggest health risk is, and you’ll likely hear breast cancer or ovarian cancer. What you won’t hear is the correct answer: heart disease. Yes, heart disease kills more women than breast and ovarian cancer combined.

The American Heart Association recently released the first set of guidelines specifically targeted to women’s hearts. One aim of the guidelines is to educate women about heart disease. Ask your doctor how these guidelines affect you.

Other research has shown that many women with heart disease have symptoms different from those that men suffer. For example, the majority of women do not experience chest pain leading up to a heart attack. Women more commonly feel extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, indigestion, or sleeping problems.

Knowing these symptoms and acting quickly could save many women who die from heart attacks.
