Presbycusis

Presbycusis is age-related hearing loss and can start as early as age 18. Some people hear it as distortion while others experience it as the inability to recognize words and sounds. It may occur simultaneously with tinnitus, which can make it increasingly difficult to engage in conversation. For many people, this type of hearing loss can be helped by hearing aids or cochlear implants.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is similar to the ringing in your ears following a loud concert. The main difference? Once you develop tinnitus, the ringing may never go away. Currently there is no cure, but it can be avoided, as it’s generally caused by frequent exposure to loud noises or continuous use of headphones.
